The Present Struggle – Narmada, World Bank and beyond.
The World Bank’s annual meeting is going on this week and there are a number of organizations calling for the bank to stop rating countries on so-called “ease of doing business” indicators that in fact serve corporate interests and result in greater abuses of human rights.  For more information please see Our Land Our Business.
About the Save Narmada Movement:
Narmada Bachao Andolan or Save Narmada Movement, comprising thousands of peasants and indigenous people, has struggled for more than 25 years against displacement, deforestation and large scale loss of farmlands due to a series of disastrous mega-dams along the Narmada River in central and western India.  This movement was the first in the world to compel the World Bank to revisit its policy and put in place critical protections called “Safeguard Policies.” These protections are now under threat.
Weakening these policies puts at risk the life and livelihood, land, water and forest on which millions depend for survival.  Please consider this an urgent call for solidarity in the upcoming phase of struggle. Please join us!
