We Shall Overcome … Day 3 of the AID Conference, 2016

On the third day of the conference I could actually relax and focus on the talks.  And what high-energy talks there were – first Kiran Vissa on agriculture and farmers and then Geetha Ramakrishnan on the rights and struggles of unorganized sector workers.

Geetha Ramakrishnan on the plight of Unorganized Sector Workers

Geetha Ramakrishnan, Secretary of the Nirman Mazdoor Panchayat Sangam talked about the plight of Unorganized Sector Workers.  Underlying the various injustices such as poor wages, long hours, poor working conditions was the sense of non-existence.

Extensive bonded labour in Tirupur. Everything has become 10-12 hours. There is no 8 hour work day.

Looking around I was glad to see at least 70 people in the hall listening to the talks.  Milling around outside the hall and helping with pack-up would be at least 20 more meaning that a hundred people were there on Day 3.

Apart from the two talks we were treated to an impromptu recital of The Gandhi Rap.
